In the world of public safety, there is a dangerous gap between looking protected and being protected. As a veteran of four decades in Ohio Law Enforcement, I’ve seen that gap swallowed by tragedy and scandal far too often.

Recently, a heartbreaking incident in Dallas—where a security detail member for a U.S. Congresswoman was killed in a shootout with police—has reignited the conversation about the weight of private protection. This isn’t just about physical safety; it is about the structural integrity of an organization and the reputation of the individual being guarded.

It Can Happen Here: The Ohio Lesson

We don’t have to look as far as Texas to see the cracks in the “entourage” model of security. Right here in Ohio, we’ve seen the fallout when high-profile statewide campaigns trust their safety to firms that haven’t been properly vetted against the highest standards of integrity.

Just this year, a major statewide campaign was forced to abruptly fire its security provider after a member of the detail was arrested on federal drug trafficking charges and found to be unlicensed along with more of his fellow bodyguards. Think about that: persons entrusted with the candidate’s life and family were allegedly operating a criminal enterprise in the shadows.

When a security firm fails this spectacularly, the damage to the candidate’s reputation is immediate and, in some cases, irreparable. It raises the question: Who is watching the watchers?

The TrueJam Standard: Policy Over Posturing

At TrueJam Insights, we operate under the mantra of Safety with Heart and Governance without Gridlock. My mission is to ensure that Ohio’s leaders—from local politicians to university boards—don’t just “round up an entourage” to give the illusion of safety. That approach is irresponsible, undisciplined, and legally fraught.

We believe that even a politician on a smaller scale faces modern threats. However, the answer isn’t always more “muscle”—it’s better policy.

Our Tiered Approach to Protection

TrueJam Insights provides the professional bridge between public safety standards and private-sector needs. Our process is designed to protect your life and your legacy:

  1. Vulnerability Assessment: We conduct a industry-standard audit of your physical and digital footprint. We look for the gaps that a “bodyguard” might miss but an adversary will exploit.

  2. Professional Policy Composition: We draft the internal emergency and safety documents that govern your protection. We ensure that your campaign staff and security detail (if needed) operate with the judgment and skill required for high-stakes environments.

  3. Responsible Escalation:

    • Low-Risk: If our assessment determines you are in a low-risk situation, TrueJam can provide discreet operational support or tie-up loose ends for your current support. We focus on plans that offer maximum protection while remaining invisible to the casual observer.

    • Moderate to High-Risk: If we find genuine threats, we will recommend and facilitate an escalation to a specialized security firm. But we do so as your advocate, ensuring they meet the same rigorous standards of integrity we demand of ourselves. If you seek a high-threat, paramilitary unit, we can help you vet that, but will not provide it.

Protection is Not a Performance

Trusting your reputation to well-intentioned individuals who lack professional law enforcement skills is a gamble you cannot afford to lose. Whether you are a campaign manager, a corporate executive, or a non-profit leader, you deserve professional emergency planning that mirrors a high-functioning public safety department.

Don’t wait for a headline to tell you your security plan was an illusion. Together, let’s build a foundation of safety that carries the weight of forty years of experience.
